What is Periodontal Disease?

Periodontal disease is a very common oral problem that can occur in people of all ages. If your gums are bleeding or swelled, you might have periodontal disease already. What makes it a critical problem is that it isn’t a painful condition which means people often do not realize that they even have any such problem. If not attended with the right type of treatment in time, it might result in periodontitis and end up with complete loss of teeth.

Common reasons for periodontal disease development:

Plaque, tartar and bacteria accumulation at the roots of the teeth is the primary reason for periodontal disease development. Some of the common factors contributing to this condition include:

  • Genetics
  • Gum Recession
  • Stress
  • Diabetes
  • Poor diet
  • Bruxism
  • Exposure to tobacco or smoking
  • Certain medication

How will I know I have periodontal disease?

If your gums are pink, fleshy, firm and do not bleed with simple brushing strokes, or normal flossing, you have healthy gums. However, if the condition is reversed, there are high chances that you have periodontal disease. However, this isn’t an alarming stage every time. It is possible that you might have brushed your teeth too vigorously or used the floss sharply that caused the gums to bleed.

Periodontitis: the next stage of periodontal disease

If the treatment for periodontal disease is prolonged, you can develop Periodontitis. The teeth start receding and cause huge pocket at the base.  The bacteria or plaque starts accumulating in these pockets causing severe infections in a longer run.

How will my teeth look?

In each stage of Periodontal disease, your teeth will appear differently.

Before:

They look pink and firm and the bone structure is strong.

Gingivitis:

There are plaque and bacteria that starts inflaming the gum

Periodontitis:

Gum start receding and there is heavy tartar buildup at the joints.

Advanced Periodontitis:

The gums condition gets worse and even the bone structure starts breaking down.
